Privacy
Tap & Tank is run by Bit Primitive (Pty) Ltd, the responsible party under the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA). We built it to need as little about you as possible: no account, no name, no email address and no tracking cookies.
What stays on your device
- Your chosen area(s), alert choices, theme, and any calculator figures or meter readings you save are kept in your browser’s local storage. They are not sent to us. Clearing your browser data removes them.
- “Near me” asks your browser for your position once. We use it on your device to find the nearest suburb or town, then discard it. Your coordinates are never stored or sent to us.
Visitor statistics
We count visits with our own cookieless statistics, so we know which pages help people. We record the page, the site that linked to us, any campaign tag in the link, the kind of device, browser and operating system, a rough screen-size band, a few actions such as “changed area”, and your country and province (worked out by Cloudflare from the network, not from GPS). We do not store your IP address. A visitor is counted with a one-way code made from a random value that changes every day and is deleted after two days, so we can’t recognise you over time. We use no advertising IDs and no third-party trackers. Add ?notrack=1 to any address to stop being counted in that browser.
Alerts
When alerts by app, Telegram or WhatsApp go live, we will store only what is needed to deliver them: the areas you follow (suburb level), and a push token, Telegram chat ID or WhatsApp number. Chat IDs and phone numbers are encrypted and never written to logs. Service alerts are the service you ask for; we will only send marketing if you opt in first, and every such message will let you opt out.
Who processes data for us
Cloudflare hosts the site, the database and the statistics, and may process data outside South Africa under its contractual safeguards. When alerts launch, Expo (app notifications), Telegram and Meta (WhatsApp) will deliver messages you ask for. Weather comes from Open-Meteo using town coordinates only, never yours.
Your rights and how to reach us
You may ask what we hold about you, ask us to correct or delete it, or object to how we use it. Email jpvdm@bitprimitive.com and we will reply within 30 days. You may also complain to the Information Regulator (South Africa) at inforegulator.org.za.
